# Google Code Jam 2003

By Roy Osherove September 26, 2003 In [Off Topic](https://osherove.com/blog/category/off-topic)

**Historical article** · Originally published September 26, 2003; technical details may be outdated.

_Google, which previously sponsored the_ [_2002 Google Programming Contest_](http://www.google.com/programming-contest/)_,_ [_2003 Google US Puzzle Championship_](http://www.google.com/puzzles/)_,_ [_CodeCon 2003_](http://codecon.info/2003/sponsors.html) _is now sponsoring something new:_

[_Google Code Jam 2003_](http://www.topcoder.com/pl/?&module=Static&d1=google&d2=google_overview)

_Do you have exceptional programming skills? Can you make computers perform like silicon puppets with just a few well-expressed commands? Are you at ease when faced with a hard stop and a group of peers evaluating every line of your code? Here’s your opportunity to display the grace of the true professional in a reward-rich environment._

_The basic idea seems to be that you're given a bunch of programming puzzles, and asked to solve them quickly and completely, and then you can try to throw edge cases to crash your opponent's code. (Sounds like the_ [_ICFP Programming Contest_](http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/icfpcontest/)_.)_

_Code can be in Java, C++, C# or VB.NET. Winners get T-Shirts, cash, and a trip to Google. Registration opens October 1._
