# Microsoft Acquires Winternals (a.k.a SysInternals) Software

This is \*huge\* news.

[Microsoft Acquires Winternals Software](http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2006/jul06/07-18WinternalsPR.mspx)
Company appoints operating systems kernel expert [Mark Russinovich](http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/) as technical fellow.

If you don't know how valuable SysInternals tools are  - [it's time to find out](http://www.sysinternals.com/).  The makers of Process Explorer, FileMon, RegMon and million other tools (all free!) have been part of many developers' lives for several years now.

It's great that microsoft not only understand the importance of their tools (which helped [bring down evil schemes](http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/02/AR2005110202362.html) by evil empires not so long ago), but are actually doing something about it - such as trying to see how to integrate them into the "out of the box" experience for windows users - or so I hope they would.

"I’ve had my eye on Mark for some time,” said Jim Allchin, co-president of the Platforms & Services Division at Microsoft. “The work he and Bryce have completed in system recovery and data protection illustrates the depth of thinking and skill they will bring to future versions of Windows. The addition of their deep kernel-level expertise to our existing strong talent will help provide us with the edge we need to continue to raise the quality and functionality bar for Windows on both the client and the server.”

PS

It may be a good time to get all the cool tools from there before they disappear/become hard to get to...
[Here are some ways to do that](http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/downloader/fwoffline.html).
